The 8th Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications (GI) was held in Yangzhou on June 29, 2017. Mr. Li Keqiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, sent a congratulatory letter. Mr. Wang Yong, State Councilor, attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

Mr. Wang pointed out, GI is an important type of intellectual property rights. Making good protection and utilization of GI is of great importance to advancing economic and social development, promoting trade and investment and protecting cultural heritages. Over the past years, the Chinese government has been stepping up efforts in protecting GI, and giving vigorous guidance in regulating both GI trademarks and management of the usage of GI-specific signs, which have effectively protected the legitimate rights of the holders at home and abroad of GI-specific signs, and promoted transnational circulation of products with GI-specific signs. In the future, we need to further promote publicity of GI-specific signs, improve management of usage of GI-specific sign trademarks, guide registrants to improve the administration system, urge users to enhance the awareness of quality and brands, improve the inter-regional protection and collaboration mechanism and establish a collaborative pattern of work to make GI play a more important role in the supply-side structural reform.

Mr. Wang emphasized that, to grow the world economy, trade and investment, we need to carry out international GI cooperation in a larger scope, on a higher level and in a deeper manner. Countries in the world need to expand openness and sharing and create platforms for GI exchanges, enhance collaboration and coordination, improve GI protection, and build consensus and more fair and reasonable international GI rules to push the world economy to an open, sustainable, balanced and inclusive path of development.

Mr. Francis Gurry, General Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and Mr. Wu Zhenglong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Acting Governor of Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, addressed the symposium. Mr. Zhang Mao, Minister of State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) of the People’s Republic of China, made a keynote speech. Mr. Liu Junchen, Vice Minister of the SAIC, chaired the symposium.
